Wet or dry rainwater harvesting

Wet Harvesting Systems

Wet systems use an underground network of pipes to channel rainwater collected from your roof directly into your tank.

These systems are called “wet systems” because the pipes remain filled with water until additional rainfall flows from the gutters, pushing the stored water into the tank.

Dry Harvesting Systems

Dry systems offer a straightforward approach to rainwater collection, with water flowing directly from the roof into the tank.

Known as “dry systems,” these setups ensure the pipes remain empty between rainfalls, as water is not retained in the system once the rain stops.

Smart, clean & effective gutter system

Collect rainwater directly from your tank roof with Pioneer’s exclusive Smart Water Savers. This innovative system eliminates the need for gutters, reducing debris and contamination while allowing you to harvest up to 25% of your tank’s capacity efficiently.

Combine your fire reserve

Why install two rainwater tanks when one can do the job? With a single, space-efficient, and cost-effective Pioneer Water Tank, you can seamlessly combine your domestic water supply and fire storage, ensuring reliability and peace of mind.

Water Storage FAQs

How much water storage do I need?

The average Australian uses around 120,000 litres of water per year. Fortunately, this doesn’t mean each person in a household requires that much water storage. These figures are based largely on suburban usage, where significant water is used for irrigation and toilet flushing. In contrast, rural and semi-rural homes typically consume much less water.

Pioneer Water Tanks estimates that a rural household generally needs about 30,000 litres of water storage per person. Tanks exceeding this size are usually adequate for most households relying solely on rainwater. However, actual water storage needs will vary depending on annual rainfall and the catchment area of the home.

Are steel water tanks more expensive than Poly tanks

Most poly rainwater tank manufacturers offer capacities up to 50,000 litres, which may not be adequate for households fully reliant on rainwater—particularly those with more than one or two occupants.

Pioneer Water Tanks offers a wide range of high-quality steel water tanks, with capacities starting at 12,200 litres and extending up to 500,000 litres. For larger or more specialised storage requirements, custom solutions are also available for commercial and industrial applications.

As water storage needs increase, steel tanks from Pioneer Water Tanks present a cost-effective and dependable long-term solution.

How much space will I need for my water tank?

The space required for a rainwater tank will depend on its size. As a general guideline, it’s recommended to have an area at least 2.5 metres wider than the tank’s diameter.

This allows for a 1-metre clearance around the tank for the sand pad, ensuring a stable foundation and minimising any potential installation issues.

For tailored advice and a smooth installation process, customers are encouraged to contact their local Pioneer Water Tanks dealer, such as NSW Water Tanks.

So what exactly is Colorbond® steel?

Proven in Australia’s harshest conditions for over 50 years, COLORBOND® steel is renowned for being more than just painted steel—it’s a high-performance, durable material engineered to stand the test of time.

Each panel is manufactured to meet Australian Standard AS1397, ensuring a premium finish and structural quality. The steel base is coated with Activate® technology, BlueScope’s globally patented metallic coating that provides exceptional corrosion resistance.

To enhance durability and appearance: ✔ A pre-treatment layer is applied to ensure strong adhesion.
✔ A polyester primer is baked onto the surface.
✔ A topcoat of exterior-grade, lead-free paint (compliant with AS/NZS 2728) is applied, offering excellent resistance to chipping, peeling, and cracking—helping tanks maintain their visual appeal for years.

Pioneer is locally owned & operated - are our competitors the same?

Pioneer Water Tanks is proudly Australian-owned and operated—a distinction not all tank companies can make. For those who value supporting local businesses, it’s worth considering who actually owns and manufactures the products being offered.

Since 1988, every Pioneer rainwater tank has been designed, manufactured, and built in Australia. As a family-owned company, Pioneer remains committed to keeping both ownership and production onshore, delivering high-quality, locally made water storage solutions that Australians can rely on.

Do you want bacteria in your water? I don’t! It’s drinking water. Do you want your kids eating or drinking mould? I don’t. But that’s what I’ve got in those tanks, a bacteria fighting lining, it’s genius.

We like to do things very naturally, which is why we appreciate the beauty of fresh rainwater. I don’t like plastic, and I only ever want to supply our customers with clean, quality water.
David Ritchie
That steel is a big part of the reason why we went with Pioneer Water Tanks. The Colorbond® colours also matched up perfectly with the house – which we had recently painted Woodland Grey. We chose this colour as we wanted the house to blend seamlessly into the beautiful natural rural environment.
Jamie Adamson
We knew we needed a huge tank to accommodate all our water usage due to no mains supply. This will initially be for the whole house, and for the garden if we have any left over. Dan had a good idea of how big this tank would be, but I couldn’t believe it when it was installed! It’s massive!
