Pioneer Water Tanks has worked across every part of New South Wales agriculture, and the poultry industry is no exception. With laying hens requiring close to 1 litre of water per day in NSW’s warm-temperate climate – and meat birds needing even more due to their rapid growth – reliable water storage is absolutely essential.
And that’s before factoring in the significant volumes required to run misting systems in large production sheds, which are critical for keeping birds cool and maintaining welfare standards during the state’s hot summer months.

While New South Wales is home to a variety of poultry – including turkeys, quail, ducks and more – the state’s poultry industry is overwhelmingly driven by chickens, with chicken meat making up the largest share of production.
With water storage solutions ranging from 12,000L right through to 500,000L, Pioneer Water Tanks has a system to suit every scale of operation. For larger poultry farms, multiple tanks can be linked together to provide over a megalitre of storage, ensuring reliable supply for misters, sheds and the thousands of thirsty hens that keep the industry moving.

The New South Wales poultry industry is dominated by meat birds – or broiler chickens – which account for the majority of the sector’s value. It is a continually expanding industry, with millions of birds processed each year to meet Australia’s strong domestic demand.
On average, Australians consume close to 50 kilograms of chicken meat per person annually, making poultry the most popular protein in the country. When viewed in that context, the scale of production in NSW quickly makes sense.
Although exports have faced challenges from global pricing pressures in recent years, local demand for poultry meat has remained steady, driving ongoing growth in the state’s broiler industry. Like other livestock sectors, there has also been a strong shift towards free-range production, with consumer demand pushing supermarkets and producers alike to expand higher-welfare options.

While it doesn’t match the meat sector in overall earnings, the New South Wales egg industry remains a vital part of the state’s poultry sector. Millions of dozens of eggs are produced each year, with an increasing share now coming from free-range systems. More than a third of NSW’s laying hens are managed under free-range or barn-laid conditions, reflecting strong consumer demand for higher-welfare production.
The vast majority of eggs are sold fresh for local consumption rather than processed, keeping them a true staple of the Australian diet. From breakfast tables to bakeries, NSW eggs are an everyday essential across the state.
It’s also estimated that hundreds of thousands of households across New South Wales keep their own backyard chickens, showing that while commercial production is strong, the humble egg continues to be part of the fabric of family life as well.
