With so many citrus growers spread across the Riverina, Central Coast and Northern Rivers, Pioneer Water Tanks has been supporting the industry for more than 30 years, delivering reliable water storage solutions to orchards and farms right across New South Wales.
NSW is Australia’s largest citrus-producing state, responsible for well over 40% of the nation’s total output. The Riverina alone produces hundreds of thousands of tonnes each year, with oranges, mandarins, lemons and limes all contributing to both the domestic market and a thriving export industry. Citrus is one of Australia’s most valuable fresh fruit exports by volume, with NSW growers playing a leading role in meeting international demand.
With a range of steel agricultural water tanks from 12,000L to 500,000L, Pioneer offers storage solutions to suit every grower – from small family orchards to large-scale commercial enterprises.

Oranges and mandarins also dominate citrus production in New South Wales, with the Riverina region accounting for the vast majority of plantings. Oranges make up more than half of the citrus area, followed closely by mandarins, which have seen strong growth in recent years thanks to export demand.
A significant share of NSW’s orange crop is grown specifically for juicing, with processors in the Riverina supplying both domestic juice companies and international markets. Fresh market oranges and mandarins are also highly sought after, with NSW fruit known for its quality and consistency.
The Riverina – centred around Griffith and Leeton – is the powerhouse of NSW citrus, producing hundreds of thousands of tonnes annually. Exports have grown rapidly over the past decade, with NSW fruit now shipped to key markets across Asia and the Middle East, cementing the state’s role as the leader in Australia’s citrus industry.

It often feels like everyone knows someone with a backyard lemon tree in New South Wales – whether it’s a neighbour sharing fruit over the fence, a co-worker bringing bags into the office, or even one in your own garden. With shrinking land sizes, homegrown lemons aren’t as common as they once were, but they remain a familiar part of the NSW lifestyle.
Commercially, lemons make up a smaller share of citrus production compared to oranges and mandarins, but they remain a steady and valuable crop. Limes and grapefruit also contribute to the mix, catering to a wide range of uses – from cooking and baking, to cocktails, and even the classic grapefruit for breakfast.
While demand for lemons is lower than for oranges, the market continues to expand, supported by population growth and the increasing popularity of fresh and processed citrus products. Exports of lemons, limes and grapefruit from NSW are also on the rise, growing steadily as new markets open up overseas.
