Erosion Prevention with Aggregate: Securing Your Tank’s Foundation

Protect Your Investment with Professional Erosion Control Solutions

A water tank is only as stable as the ground it sits on. While a professional sand pad provides the perfect level base for a fire tank installation or rural storage solution, the environment is constantly working to undermine it. Wind and heavy NSW rainfall can quickly lead to sand washout, where the edges of your pad erode, leaving the tank staves unsupported and the liner at risk.

At NSW Water Tanks, we provide specialised erosion prevention services using high-quality aggregate to armour your site immediately following installation.

The Post-Installation Challenge: Why Armouring Matters

Once your tank is in place, the exposed sand perimeter is vulnerable. Without a protective barrier, water runoff from the roof or surrounding landscape can carve channels into the pad. Our erosion control solutions are designed to lock the foundation in place, ensuring that your tank remains perfectly level and structurally sound, even through the most intense storm seasons.

What is Aggregate and Why Do We Use It?

In the context of water tanks, aggregate refers to a specific grade of crushed blue metal or river stone. Unlike soil or sand, aggregate is heavy enough to resist being washed away by high-velocity water, yet porous enough to allow for excellent drainage.

By applying a thick, compacted border of stone around your tank base, we create a sacrificial layer that absorbs the energy of falling water and prevents the underlying sand from migrating.

Key Benefits of Aggregate Capping

Foundation Longevity

Eliminates the risk of the sand pad blowing out or washing away.

Vermin & Pest Barrier

While pests find sand easy to burrow into, a dense layer of aggregate acts as a natural deterrent for rabbits and rodents.

Corrosion Mitigation

The stone layer helps moisture drain away from the base rail and bottom staves, reducing the risk of ground-level corrosion.

Professional Finish

It provides a clean, landscaped look that complements your property, making it perfect for commercial, rural and home water tanks.

Low Maintenance

Unlike concrete, which can crack or heave, stone erosion prevention products are flexible and easy to top up if ever required.

Our Erosion Prevention Process

1.

Site Inspection

We assess the batter (the slope) of your existing pad to determine the necessary coverage area.

2.

Edge Compaction

We ensure the sand pad is tightly packed before the stone is applied.

3.

Aggregate Application

We spread a 500mm to 1m wide border of stone around the entire circumference of the tank.

4.

Sealing & Finishing

For farm water tanks at rural sites, we can discuss specialised finishes, including the application of an exposed aggregate sealer to help the stone stay bound and maintain a wet-look aesthetic while resisting dust.

Good for you, good for the earth

Steel water tanks offer an eco-friendly advantage, thanks to their infinite recyclability. At the end of their long service life, they can be easily scrapped and melted down for reuse, reducing waste and conserving resources. In contrast, while poly tanks may be recyclable initially, their structural breakdown often leaves them unsuitable for recycling, resulting in landfill waste once they can no longer hold water.

Water tanks also benefit the environment by helping to manage stormwater runoff. By harvesting rainwater, they reduce the volume of water flowing into streets and waterways, easing pressure on stormwater systems. When installed collectively in a neighborhood or town, rainwater tanks can significantly mitigate the risk of flooding and erosion, offering a sustainable solution for water management.
