Why AQUALINER Fresh®?

Keeping your water tank free from microbes means cleaner, healthier, fresher water for longer.

The only water tank liner in Australia that improves on Australian standards.

This antimicrobial technology is also used in hospitals, food manufacturing and kitchens

Aqualiner FRESH® with Sanitized® technology utilises the natural antibacterial properties of silver.

Made like no other liner

Sanitized® antimicrobial technology is integrated directly into the master batch of black polyethylene (PE) film used in the construction of the AQUALINER Fresh® tank liner.

This black PE film is one of three layers that make up the liner fabric, contributing to its strength, flexibility, abrasion resistance, and leak prevention. The antimicrobial-treated black PE film is laminated to the inner surface of the liner—the side in direct contact with the stored water—helping to maintain cleaner, healthier water over time.

Six principles of our liner technology

Released in 2018 as the culmination of 30 years of research and development, Aqualiner FRESH® offers these six key differences.

Click on each section to learn more.

1. Fresh Water For Longer

Antimicrobial technology provides an added layer of protection to tank liners by helping to resist the growth of microbes such as bacteria and algae, commonly referred to as biofilm.

As biofilm builds up on the walls and floor of a tank liner, it eventually breaks away and settles at the bottom, forming a layer of sludge. This can compromise water quality over time.

Water stored in a clean, protected tank—free from microbial buildup—is noticeably fresher and cleaner than water sitting above a layer of bacterial and algal sludge.

2. Additional Layer of Defence

Just like any textile or fabric exposed to dirt, mould, algae, and bacteria, a tank liner can experience reduced lifespan due to microbial build-up over time.

The antimicrobial properties of the AQUALINER Fresh® help to minimise this build-up, meaning the tank and liner require less frequent cleaning. As a result, the liner lasts longer, which also contributes to extending the overall lifespan of the tank itself.

3. No Nano Technology

In today’s climate of increasing antibiotic-resistant pathogens, silver is re-emerging as a trusted antimicrobial agent in infection prevention technologies.

Recognised for its bacteriostatic properties, silver—being a natural element—is widely accepted for its effectiveness in inhibiting bacterial growth.

Importantly, neither the Sanitized® technology nor the AQUALINER Fresh® liner used in Pioneer Water Tanks contains any nano-particles, ensuring safe and reliable performance.

4. Reduce Mould & Bacteria Buildup

Antimicrobial additives are highly versatile and work in various ways to control the growth of microbes.

When incorporated during the manufacturing process, these additives make surfaces and materials inhospitable to bacteria, mould, fungi, algae, and other microorganisms.

Materials enhanced with antimicrobial technology actively inhibit or destroy microbes upon contact, helping to maintain cleaner and more hygienic surfaces over time.

5. NSF / ANSI 61 & AS / NSZ 4020 Compliant

The AQUALINER Fresh® tank liner used in Pioneer Water Tanks has been independently tested and accredited to meet all relevant Australian and international standards for materials in contact with drinking water.

This includes certification to:
✔ NSF/ANSI 61 by NSF International
✔ AS/NZS 4020 by the Australian Water Quality Centre

These accreditations ensure the liner is safe and suitable for long-term potable water storage.

6. Environmentally Safe

A tank fitted with a liner that incorporates antimicrobial technology requires less frequent cleaning and desludging to maintain a healthy internal environment.

This not only helps improve water quality, but also saves time and reduces maintenance costs.

When sludge levels become excessive, there’s a risk that sediment may be drawn out through the tap, outlet, or pump—often appearing as unappealing brown particles in the water.

It’s something no one wants to find in their drinking water, which is why proactive prevention is key.

FAQ

Is the liner fabric imported and made into a tank liner in Australia?

Sanitized® antimicrobial technology is integrated directly into the master batch of black polyethylene (PE) film used in the construction of the AQUALINER Fresh® tank liner.

This black PE film is one of several layers that make up the liner fabric, contributing to its exceptional strength, flexibility, abrasion resistance, and outstanding water-proofing.

The antimicrobial-treated black PE film is laminated to the inner surface of the liner—the part that comes into direct contact with the stored water—helping to maintain cleaner water and reduce microbial build-up over time.

Can fabric be imported and called Australian made?

While some competitors may take a different approach, Pioneer Water Tanks stands apart as a proud Australian manufacturer with over 30 years of history supporting locally made products.

Together with trusted Australian supply chain partners, Pioneer continues to invest in advanced manufacturing within Australia—creating local jobs and maintaining full control over product quality from start to finish.

What's special about the Aqualiner FRESH® water tank liner?

Bacterial contamination often goes unnoticed, as it isn’t visible to the naked eye—but high levels of bacteria can significantly compromise water hygiene.

The AQUALINER Fresh® tank liner, used in Pioneer Water Tanks, incorporates Sanitized® antimicrobial technology to provide advanced protection against the growth and spread of algae, bacteria, and mould.

This built-in antimicrobial layer acts as an additional line of defence, helping to maintain cleaner water and safeguard water quality over time

Does Aqualiner FRESH® exceed Australian standards?

The AQUALINER Fresh® tank liner used in Pioneer Water Tanks meets—and exceeds—the requirements of AS/NZS 4020:2005, the Australian standard for testing products in contact with drinking water.

With over 30 years of investment in the research and development of water tank liners, Pioneer is committed to ongoing innovation and the adoption of advanced technologies that keep their products at the forefront of global water storage solutions.

This commitment to continuous improvement drives Pioneer to consistently raise the bar in product performance, durability, and water quality protection.

Are other liners subject to algae, bacteria, and moulds?

Yes—no other tank company currently offers antimicrobial tank liner technology. This advanced application is exclusive to Pioneer Water Tanks and is patent pending, making Pioneer the only manufacturer in the market with this level of water quality protection built into their liners.

Is the AQUALINER Fresh® water tank liner safe?

Yes—antimicrobial additives are commonly used in everyday household items such as kitchen utensils, chopping boards, bench tops, food containers, pillows, shoes, activewear, and bed sheets. The same proven technology is now applied to water storage through the AQUALINER Fresh® tank liner used in Pioneer Water Tanks.

This advanced liner has been independently tested and accredited to meet all relevant Australian and international standards for products that come into contact with drinking water, including:
✔ NSF/ANSI 61 by NSF International
✔ AS/NZS 4020 by the Australian Water Quality Centre

What is the antimicrobial additive added to the liner?

Sanitized® antimicrobial technology is incorporated into the master batch of black polyethylene (PE) film used in the construction of the AQUALINER Fresh® tank liner, featured in Pioneer Water Tanks.

This black PE film is one of several engineered layers that give the liner its exceptional strength, flexibility, abrasion resistance, and waterproofing performance.

The antimicrobial-treated film is then laminated to the inner surface of the liner—the side that comes into direct contact with stored water—helping to maintain cleaner water by resisting microbial growth.

Do you want bacteria in your water? I don’t! It’s drinking water. Do you want your kids eating or drinking mould? I don’t. But that’s what I’ve got in those tanks, a bacteria fighting lining, it’s genius.

We like to do things very naturally, which is why we appreciate the beauty of fresh rainwater. I don’t like plastic, and I only ever want to supply our customers with clean, quality water.

That steel is a big part of the reason why we went with Pioneer Water Tanks. The Colorbond® colours also matched up perfectly with the house – which we had recently painted Woodland Grey. We chose this colour as we wanted the house to blend seamlessly into the beautiful natural rural environment.
Jamie Adamson
We knew we needed a huge tank to accommodate all our water usage due to no mains supply. This will initially be for the whole house, and for the garden if we have any left over. Dan had a good idea of how big this tank would be, but I couldn’t believe it when it was installed! It’s massive!
