Since 1988, Pioneer Water Tanks has been supplying reliable steel water tanks across Australia for domestic, farming, firefighting, and industrial applications.
Designed by Pioneer’s in-house engineering team for the harsh Australian climate, these tanks are constructed from 100% Australian-made ZINCALUME® and COLORBOND® steel, ensuring strength and durability.
Through an exclusive distributor network, made up primarily of small family-run businesses, Pioneer tanks are sold, installed, and serviced nationwide, including in some of Australia’s most remote locations—often requiring only minimal site preparation.
Over more than 35 years, Pioneer has delivered over 100,000 water tanks across Australia, many of which are still operating reliably to this day—often installed by the same experienced teams who continue to serve local communities, including NSW Water Tanks.

A feat of engineering excellence, the Pioneer V-LOCK® wall profile is built to withstand the test of time, offering enhanced strength and superior support for the internal tank liner.
The AQUALINER Fresh® antimicrobial tank liner is specifically designed to help keep stored water fresher, cleaner, and healthier for longer.

The 150mm diameter overflow connection and down piping used in Pioneer Water Tanks is the largest on the market. Designed to meet Plumbing Industry Board requirements, it ensures the overflow rate exceeds the inflow rate—helping to prevent costly overflow issues.
Pioneer’s one-piece PVC wall connection prevents water from coming into contact with any steel at the overflow point. This design also eliminates the need for chemical-based sealants, helping to protect your potable water supply from potential contamination.

Tek screws are used to secure the roof sheets to the tank’s roof structure, and they come in four classes of corrosion resistance, with Class 4 offering the highest level of protection.
Every Tek screw used on a Pioneer Water Tank is Class 4, providing maximum corrosion resistance and ensuring the longest possible service life for your tank.

Recommended when clean, fine sand is difficult to source, or when additional protection is needed for the tank liner against potential damage from sharp objects such as stones or rocks.

Dirt, dust, spiders, insects, and vermin often seek out small spaces to nest. Superseal is a closed-cell protective foam that fills the gaps between the roof sheets and tank wall, helping to protect your clean water from external contaminants.

Fully concealed structural bolts create a smooth, tamper-free panel joint, while the unique vertical seams add strength and reinforce the overall integrity of the tank.
Engineered to withstand hundreds of tonnes of water pressure, Pioneer’s certified bolt strips deliver a strong and secure connection between each tank panel.

The exclusive heavy-duty roof on a Pioneer Water Tank is securely connected to the tank body using a unique swivel foot roof connector and high-tensile bolts.
This design ensures safe and reliable load resistance, providing strong roof tie-down and peace of mind—even in the harshest weather conditions.
The average Australian uses around 120,000 litres of water per year. Fortunately, this doesn’t mean every person in your household needs that much water storage. This figure is largely based on suburban water use, where a significant amount goes to irrigation and toilet flushing. In contrast, rural and semi-rural homes typically use far less.
According to Pioneer Water Tanks, the average rural household requires around 30,000 litres of water storage per person. A rainwater tank that meets or exceeds this capacity is generally sufficient for homes relying solely on rainwater. Keep in mind that your annual rainfall and roof catchment area play a major role in determining how much water you can actually harvest.
Most poly rainwater tank manufacturers offer sizes up to 50,000 litres, which is often not sufficient for households of more than one or two people who are fully reliant on rainwater.
Pioneer Water Tanks provides a broad range of steel water tanks, starting from 12,200 litres and extending up to 500,000 litres. For larger or more specialised needs, custom water storage solutions can be quoted for commercial or industrial applications.
Generally, the larger the storage requirement, the more cost-effective a steel water tank becomes over time.
While water quality can sometimes be assessed by smell, appearance, or taste, bacterial contamination may still go undetected—and high bacteria levels can significantly affect water hygiene.
The AQUALINER Fresh® tank liner used in Pioneer Water Tanks incorporates Sanitized® antimicrobial technology within its advanced multi-layered design, offering industry-leading protection against algae, bacteria, and mould.
This antimicrobial technology provides an extra layer of defence, helping to maintain water quality and support healthier, cleaner water storage.
The space required for a rainwater tank depends on the size of the tank you plan to install. As a general rule, ensure you have an area at least 2.5 metres wider than the diameter of your desired tank.
This allows for the necessary 1-metre clearance on all sides for the sand pad and helps prevent potential installation challenges.
If you’re unsure about the space requirements, contact your local Pioneer Water Tanks dealer, who can provide expert advice and ensure a smooth installation process for your rainwater tank.
Tested in Australia’s harshest conditions for over 50 years, COLORBOND® steel is far more than just “paint on steel.” It is an advanced, high-performance material built for durability and long-lasting performance.
The steel base of the panels meets Australian Standard AS1397, ensuring strict compliance with the highest standards for quality grade and finish.
The panels are coated with Activate® technology, BlueScope’s globally patented metallic coating, providing exceptional anti-corrosion protection.
A thin pre-treatment layer is applied to enhance the adhesion of subsequent coatings, followed by a baked polyester primer for added durability. The panels are finished with a topcoat of specially developed, exterior-grade, lead-free paint, compliant with Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS2728, offering superior resistance to chipping, peeling, and cracking—ensuring that your tank’s finish remains in great condition for longer.
Pioneer Water Tanks is proudly locally owned and operated, unlike some other tank companies. If supporting Australian-made products is important to you, it’s worth checking who actually owns the company you’re dealing with.
Since 1988, Pioneer has been building rainwater tanks in Australia, and remains a family-owned business. Pioneer continues to keep both the ownership and manufacturing of these iconic tanks onshore and in Australian hands.
