GT90: 90,000L Water Tank

90,000L Steel Water Tanks – A Smart Choice for Rural and Semi-Rural Living

90,000-litre water tanks are a popular option for individuals or couples living in rural areas, as well as families in semi-rural parts of the Illawarra, who want to make the most of their rainwater for garden use, household supply, or even topping up a swimming pool. This size is typically suitable for supporting the daily domestic needs of two people.

The GT90, Pioneer Water Tanks’ 90,000L model, has a gross volume of 92,570 litres and is a dependable choice for properties without mains water or those looking to reduce reliance on scheme supply. While the GT110 remains the more popular choice due to its added capacity, the GT90 continues to be a solid favourite for modest-sized homes and smaller catchment areas.

At NSW Water Tanks, we supply a wide range of Pioneer Water Tank sizes, so whether you’re in Avondale, Curramore, or the foothills of Macquarie Pass, we can help ensure you select the right tank size to suit your rainfall, roof space, and household needs.

Gross capacities

If you’re trying to determine whether a 90,000-litre steel water tank is the right fit for your needs, our rainwater storage calculator (below) can help. It allows you to estimate how much rainfall you can collect from your roof, and it’s a great tool to use alongside tracking your household’s daily water use.

The table below provides the dimensions and gross capacities of the GT90 (92,570 litres), along with its two neighbouring models—the GT110 and GT80—to help you compare sizes and make an informed choice for your property in Calderwood, Huntley, or the surrounding foothills of the Illawarra escarpment.

Calculate your perfect rainwater tank size

We estimate that the average rural household needs around 30,000 litres of water storage per person to maintain a reliable supply throughout the year.

To calculate how much rainwater you can collect from your roof (your catchment area), use the simple rainwater harvesting calculator below. This tool is especially useful for residents in areas like Jamberoo, West Dapto, or Croom, where properties often rely heavily on tank water.

The Pioneer Water Tanks Difference

At NSW Water Tanks, we’re proud to supply Pioneer Water Tanks, who have been manufacturing 90,000-litre rainwater tanks trusted by Australian families for more than 30 years. Pioneer continues to lead the industry through ongoing innovation, strength, and quality.

Whether you’re looking for a 90,000L tank or something larger like a 190,000L model, every Pioneer Water Tank is manufactured right here in Australia using genuine Zincalume® or Colorbond® Steel. Pioneer remains a proudly 100% Australian-owned and family-operated business, and through NSW Water Tanks, their trusted products are available to properties in Yallah, Brownsville, Kembla Grange, and surrounding semi-rural communities.

At NSW Water Tanks, we supply Pioneer Water Tanks featuring the exclusive Pioneer V-Lock® tank wall profile, purpose-built for water storage. This design not only provides exceptional strength and long-term durability, but it also helps protect the internal liner from the stress and stretching that can occur with regular corrugated wall panels.

Each tank includes the Aqualiner Fresh® antimicrobial liner, which works from the inside to help keep your water cleaner and fresher for longer. It’s a smart addition for those relying on rainwater for household use, offering protection against harmful bacteria and reducing the need for frequent professional cleaning.

All 90,000-litre Pioneer Water Tanks supplied by NSW Water Tanks come backed by the 20/20 Warranty—a 20-year conditional structural warranty and a 20-year conditional warranty against water leakage—ideal for properties across Farmborough Heights, Dombarton, and other rain-reliant communities in the region.

Tank factors to consider

Fire Reserve

This is a volume of water that is always readily available in the event of fighting fire. Commonly this can be up to 20,000 litres.

Irrigation

When looking to irrigate, factors such as water source, harvesting capacity, and usage volume will all need to be considered.

Water Source

Harvesting water from a roof, filling up from a bore or dam will impact the size of water storage tank that will be most optimal for you.

Rainwater Harvesting

The size of your roof catchment area, in addition to your annual rainfall will determine how much water you can harvest.

Domestic Usage

Having an idea of what domestic functions you intend to connect to your tank and how often each will be used will be advantageous.

Total Volume

It’s better to have water and not need it, than to need water and not have it. It may pay to install a bigger tank to mitigate running out of water.

What comes with my 90,000L water tank?

Every 90,000-litre Pioneer Water Tank supplied by NSW Water Tanks includes a full set of standard accessories, along with optional upgrades to suit your property’s specific water storage requirements.

Among the standard inclusions is the exclusive Aqualiner Fresh® antimicrobial liner, which is designed to keep your harvested rainwater fresher for longer by reducing bacterial growth inside the tank.

Whether you’re based in Cordeaux Heights, Avoca, or the outer western edges of the Illawarra, we can help tailor your tank setup with the right combination of accessories for long-term performance and peace of mind.

Water Tank Sizes

Pioneer Water Tanks’ 90,000L model is the GT90, offering a gross capacity of 92,570 litres. If you’re exploring nearby options, consider the GT110 with 110,166 litres, or the more compact GT80 with 76,504 litres—ideal choices depending on your catchment size and household needs in Wongawilli, Tullimbar, or other fast-growing semi-rural areas of the Illawarra.

90,000L Water Tank FAQs

How much water storage do I need?

The average Australian uses somewhere around 120,000L of water a year, but does that mean you need 120,000L sized water tank for each person in your home? Thankfully the answer to that question is no, as this number is based mostly on suburban figures, where the vast majority of water is used on irrigation and toilet flushing, and the typical rural home uses much less water than this.

We estimate that the average rural home needs about 30,000L of water per person, per year, and if you’re relying on that alone, a rainwater tank that exceeds this figure would be sufficient. Of course, your ability to harvest rainwater is also heavily dependent on your annual rainfall.

Poly vs steel water tank prices

Poly Water Tanks typically only come in sizes of up to 50,000L, which typically isn’t enough water supply for any more than two people with no access to mains water supply.

Pioneer’s Steel Water Tank Sizes range from our smaller GT10 which comes in at 12,200L all the way through to our GT500 which has a water storage capacity of 500,000L. Larger or more specific water storage facilities for commercial or industrial applications can also be quoted to order.

How much space will I need for my water tank?

Whilst the answer to this is entirely dependent on what size water tank you order, a safe rule of thumb would be to ensure a space 3m wider than the diameter of your desired water tank. This ensures comfortable room for the required 1m on all sides for the pad, and ensures there will be no difficulties at the time of installation.

How long will it take for my water tank to be installed?

With over 50 Dealers Australia Wide, we try and make the delivery of our water tanks as efficient and effective as possible. Typically a Pioneer Water Tank is delivered within 3 to 5 weeks of an order being placed. However, if special circumstances require a shorter delivery time, give us a call and we can endeavor to have your water tank installed as soon as possible.

What is the difference between "gross" and "effective" capacity

“Water tanks are listed as ‘Gross’ capacity as an industry standard and represents the total volume of water that the tank can hold. Indeed all tank manufacturers use this standard to represent each of their size options. The ‘useable’ capacity or ‘net’ capacity will vary according to what each individual requirement are. For example, fire reserves, sludge zones, scour drains, gravity issues etc will affect where outlets are placed.

Pioneer offers an oversized, ‘bell mouth’ internal fixture which allows for water volumes to reach very close to the top of the walls.
If you are assuming the overflow that penetrates the wall is at the top fill level, that is not the case – the diagram on this page shows how this works. The top of the water level is only about 120mm below the top of the wall which allows for the roof trusses to just sit clear of the water.

What is the standard size of a water tank?

As everyone’s water harvesting and rainwater storage needs are different, depending on their annual rainfall, water usage, and roof size, as are standard water tank sizes.  Pioneer Water Tanks offer sizes from 12,000 litres to 500,000 litres with 110,000 litres being the most common for rural homes. If you are unsure call us on 1800 999 599, and our sales team will be able to assist.

What accessories come with my water tank?

All Pioneer Water Tanks come with our standard accessories, including but not limited to; our industry leading AQUALINER FRESH® tank liner, our 150mm diameter tank overflow and a galvanised ladder. In addition, a range of optional tank accessories are also available for your water tank.

Do you want bacteria in your water? I don’t! It’s drinking water. Do you want your kids eating or drinking mould? I don’t. But that’s what I’ve got in those tanks, a bacteria fighting lining, it’s genius.

We like to do things very naturally, which is why we appreciate the beauty of fresh rainwater. I don’t like plastic, and I only ever want to supply our customers with clean, quality water.
David Ritchie
That steel is a big part of the reason why we went with Pioneer Water Tanks. The Colorbond® colours also matched up perfectly with the house – which we had recently painted Woodland Grey. We chose this colour as we wanted the house to blend seamlessly into the beautiful natural rural environment.
Jamie Adamson
We knew we needed a huge tank to accommodate all our water usage due to no mains supply. This will initially be for the whole house, and for the garden if we have any left over. Dan had a good idea of how big this tank would be, but I couldn’t believe it when it was installed! It’s massive!
